# eff.co.za

## Three letters, many meanings

I registered **eff.co.za in 2008** because I've supported the [Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)](https://www.eff.org) for a long time. Since 1990 this non-profit has defended privacy, free expression, encryption and the right to tinker in the digital world. Those causes have mattered to me since I started out as an internet entrepreneur, when I founded gulli.com in 1998.

## Registered five years before the party existed

South Africa's political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters, was founded in 2013, five years after this domain was registered. This site has no connection to that party or to any other political organisation, and it isn't meant to refer to them.

## What "EFF" means around the world

- **Electronic Frontier Foundation:** the leading non-profit for digital civil liberties ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Frontier_Foundation))
- **The letter F:** spelled "eff" in English, and "Eff" or "eff" in German, Swedish and Norwegian
- **"eff.":** short for "effective" or "efficiency," as in a contract's effective date or an engineer's efficiency figure
- **EFF:** the efficiency rating in basketball statistics
- **"Eff":** the polite British stand-in for a ruder word, as in "effing and blinding"

Three letters this short don't belong to any single organisation, country or culture. A political party is just one of many uses.
